HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT EYEBROW SHAPE FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE

Can eyebrow shapes alter the appearance of your face shape? Absolutely! Eyebrows can make your face look slimmer, longer, wider... and if you go to a permanent makeup artist who knows what they are doing, they can help you determine the perfect eyebrow shape for your face shape! The process can be described as something similar to finding the right bangs or haircut, meaning, certain brows will work better with certain face structures. If you’ve been thinking about getting micro-blading done on your eyebrows, you’re probably struggling to decide if you need a sharp arch, a straighter structure or a gentle curve. Well, don’t fret! Our Master technicians at Ana Square have it all figured out for you.

In case you’re wondering, this whole process has a specific scientific term “visagism”. Visagism refers to the art of beautifying and transforming the face using certain techniques or cosmetics. These techniques are applied strategically and with purpose. The strategic part when getting permanent makeup done to your eyebrows, is taking into consideration the shape of your face and deciding which eyebrow shape will best define and contribute to your features. So first, we need to figure out what shape your face actually is. Without a trained eye, at times, this can be hard to determine. You could be in-between two face shapes, and that often makes it difficult to determine which face shape you truly have. In the name of being accurate and acting with purpose (to give you your dream look!), we often use measuring tape to determine the exact measurements. A PMU artist will most likely measure your forehead, cheekbones, jawline and face length to determine which part is the widest. We suggest trusting the experts, to help you determine the correct shape!

We’re going to go over the six most common face shapes to give you an idea of what brow shape is the best fit for you!

An Oval Face

When you have an oval shape face, your cheekbones are usually the widest part of your face. Oval faces can be characterized as long and slim.

When your face is oval shaped, we typically recommend a slight arch in the eyebrow as this can add more dimension. However, be careful with dramatic or sharpened arches. We suggest soft angles as this will better compliment your face shape. An important factor to remember with oval shaped faces is that the brows should be longer than the eyes to add more depth to the face.

Oval Face: A full natural brow with a soft arch.

A Round Face

Round Faces are slightly curved outward and feature a rounded chin. If you have a round face, your cheekbones are typically your widest feature, much like oval faces.

The best brows for a round face, are brows with angles. Angles can help overcome any overly round areas and add a bit more elongation. If you have a round face, you can probably benefit from thicker brows with higher arches, this will give more attention to your cheeks and eyes! A good rule of thumb for round faces is that the brows should extend past the outer edge of the eye.

Round Face: Fuller brows with a sharp angled arch.

A Long Face

When you have a long face, the largest measurement is the face length.

When you have a long face, it is good to pay attention to enhancing the horizontal features. The best way to do this is to have a longer brow with a gentle arch beginning as far as the outer edge of the brow. A straighter brow with a soft edge can help widen the face shape!

Long Face: A straighter brow with a soft edge.

(This face shape can also pull off fluffy brows well, because it helps offset the length of your face).

A Square Face

A square face means all measurements are nearly the same. The chin tends to be less defined and your jawline will be wider.

If you have a square face, forget about very defined arches and sharp angles! A square face pairs well with thick brows and soft angles. To help soften the jawline of a square face, you’ll want to lift the brows with soft curved arches. We recommend avoiding going too low with the tail as this can start to create the appearance of downward shaped eye.

Square Face: Thick brows with soft curved arches.

A Heart Face

A heart shaped face will follow the general outline of a heart. This means a wider forehead and a pointed chin.

A heart shaped face can be best paired with a soft arch, this helps balance a longer chin. If you’re wondering about thickness, choose a fuller shape! A heart shaped face is typically widest in the brow area. This means, fluffy brows work really well with heart shaped faces because bigger brows won’t overwhelm this area of the face.

Heart Face: A gently rounded brow, with a thickness to it.

A Diamond Face

A diamond face is kind of similar to a round face, but diamonds have narrower chins and wide, high cheekbones. The top of your head will also be narrower than the middle if you have a diamond shaped face.

A diamond shaped face goes well with curved brow and an angled arch. When having a diamond face shaped, the goal can be to widen the appearance of your forehead and an angled brow does this best.

Diamond Face: A curved brow, with an angled arch.
